Municipal councillors call for group insurance coverage

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The tragic death of Seberang Prai municipal councillor Bakhtiar Appandi Yahya has raised concern among fellow municipal councillors about the need for group insurance coverage.
Councillor Md Jamil Abd Rahman said the council should consider applying for group insurance coverage for all serving councillors.

“Councillors are exposed to various risks and dangers, especially when they are out serving the people.

“The council should ensure its councillors have insurance coverage, to assist their respective families should anything happen to the councillors concerned,” he told a full council meeting at the MPSP headquarters here on Friday.
Two-term councillor Bakhtiar was killed in a road accident after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a lorry in Taman Desa Sena, Tasek Gelugor on Thursday.

Bakthiar, 56, a pest control branch manager, was heading home on his motorcycle after attending a meeting at the council headquarters when the lorry crashed into him at 5pm.

He died on the spot.
